I heard much the same at work tonight when I arrived. At least two people with future reservations have canceled them due to the gasoline shortage, and one person already in house is leaving early because of it.

As for those of you environmentalists out there that have put us in this situation by lobbying congress to not build new refineries since the 1970's, best start installing that solar panel and sail on your car, and see how far your green power takes you down the road.

Think harder. US oil production peaked in 1970. That is why we haven't built any refineries- oil companies aren't stupid. With global oil production now peaking you certainly won't see any companies willing to pony up and build more refining capacity. Blame it on treehuggers if that makes you feel better but that position comes out of ignorance.
The real problem is we have mostly one transportation option in this country- gasoline powered cars. That's a limitation the American people bought hook, line and sinker.
nulinegvgv: Well, South Dakota is in the process of building a new refinery, it was passed just this year. Opposition, you will notice, is led by a combination of NIMBYs and environmentalists.
