What To Do With Fort Monroe?

Virginia officials are wondering what to do with Fort Monroe, in Hampton, Virginia, after the US Army leaves in 2011.

I visited the fort often when I was in the Navy. It's a lovely moated fortress with tons of history; fugitive slaves lived there, Robert E. Lee served there while in the US Army, Edgar Allan Poe was a US Army sergeant stationed there, and Confederate President Jefferson Davis was imprisoned there after the Civil War.

Here's a shot from Google Earth:

There's discussion of making it a National Park or National Historic Site; I don't think it's of sufficient historical interest for national status, but it would be a crown jewel in the Virginia State Park program.

  1. They ought to exhume "Lil Mac" MacClellan and rebury him there - it's where his military career died it's only fitting that he join it.
