Death At the Back of the Boat

The back of a boat can be a "kill zone," as a tragedy at Lake Waccamaw, NC demonstrates.

I'd never heard of a carbon monoxide "kill zone" in the back of a boat before.

  1. We learned about this in Coast Guard Auxiliary. It's sometimes called the "Station Wagon" effect - the near vertical stern causes a pocket of air to be captured and pulled behind the boat. Since the exhaust is expelled at the stern, there's a buildup of carbon monoxide.

The cure is to stop the boat and turn direction every 5 minutes or so.

Good to see you blogging again.
