He Looks Like the Sort That Would Do That

"Florida man accused of throwing bucket of urine on building inspector during investigation."

Arthur Conan Doyle would title this one The Adventure of the Tampa Tinkle-Tosser.

He certainly looks like a piss pitcher, don't he?

He Choked It 'Til Its Little Eyes Bugged Out

Er, wait a minute, it was a Chihuahua, they're like that normally.

Maybe when you choke a Chihuahua their little eyes bug out like someone from Total Recall?

Headline of the Day

"3 women arrested after twerking in Beaverton."

Really. Beaverton.

Quote of the Day

"Shouldn’t we be equally angered by the fact that his private, intimate conversation was taped and then leaked to the media?"

Basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, on Clippers owner Donald Sterling.

And also:

So, if we’re all going to be outraged, let’s be outraged that we weren’t more outraged when his racism was first evident. Let’s be outraged that private conversations between people in an intimate relationship are recorded and publicly played. Let’s be outraged that whoever did the betraying will probably get a book deal, a sitcom, trade recipes with Hoda and Kathie Lee, and soon appear on Celebrity Apprentice and Dancing with the Stars.

Man's got a fine sense of sarcasm, don't he?

One Thing That the Recent Hugo Nominations Have Done...

...is point me in the direction of particular authors I might not else have read, e.g., Vox Day. So many leftist heads exploded in outrage when Day was nominated for a Hugo - - John Scalzi, for example - - that it woke the contrarian in me and inspired me to check out Day's work.

So thanks, leftist assholes!

No, I didn't misspell that. Butter knife.

Dumbass.

Collector-Quality Pens Made From the Deck Of USS North Carolina (BB-55).

Story.

The website if you wish to buy one of the pens is here.

The brass-and-teak Bolt Action pen is awfully tempting, but at $135 it's hard to fit it in my budget. But damn, it's a pretty pen:

Holy Week In Seville, Spain - - El Silencio

Holy week in Seville, Spain, is one of the greatest religious events on Earth. It features an entire week of processions to the cathedral, sponsored by the various churches and religious organizations known as confraternities. Each procession consists of a float carried on the shoulders of volunteers, marchers from the confraternities dressed in robes and hoods (the US Ku Klux Klan got the idea for its robes and hoods from the confraternities), and various others, many accompanied by bands. Each confraternity marches in procession on a particular day of the week. The week's climax arrives on Good Friday at dawn, called La Madruga in Seville.

Here is the confraternity that marches at dawn on Good Friday, El Silencio, named because the procession is made solemnly and with great dignity, without the band noise and boisterousness of other processions:

And here is the music composed for dawn of Good Friday in Seville, La Madruga, by Abel Moreno Gómez:

Indoctrination Chronicles #12

Parent says daughter warned by teacher for carrying Bible at local school.

The mother of a Potosi High School student said a teacher went too far when her daughter was reprimanded for carrying a Bible around school.

Angela English says her daughter, Kiela, called her from school saying a teacher yelled at her for carrying a Bible and discussing religion with a classmate.

Her daughter wasn't punished, but she says it's clear even talking about the Bible in the hallways of the high school isn't acceptable.

You've Heard Of Peak Oil?

What about "Peak Beard?"

After years in the cultural ascendancy, covering all manner of faces from Hollywood to hipster-ville, it seems that the beard’s day in the sun might finally be over.

A new study published in the journal Biology Letters suggests that we might have reached ‘peak beard’, with the overwhelming popularity of facial hair meaning that the beard is no longer unusual enough to be attractive.

Researchers from the University of New South Wales found that when test subjects were shown a succession of clean-shaven men followed by individuals sporting anything from light stubble to Charles Darwin-style face-clouds, it was the second group that rated more attractive.

However, the opposite was also true, and when the test subjects (comprising of 1,453 heterosexual or bisexual women and 213 heterosexual men) were shown a succession of photos of men with facial hear, it was the un-bearded individuals that were deemed better looking. Novelty, it seems, is a key determinant in the attractiveness of beards.

Sergeant-Major of the Marine Corps: A Poor Marine Is a Motivated Marine

That's what he thinks. Really.

Lower pay and slimmed-down benefits will make Marines more disciplined and less wasteful, according to the Corps’ top enlisted Marine.

In comments before a Senate Armed Services Committee panel on Wednesday, Sgt. Maj. of the Marine Corps Micheal Barrett dismissed lawmaker concerns that proposed compensation trims in the Pentagon’s fiscal 2015 budget proposal would hurt troops’ morale or desire to serve.

“Marines don’t run around asking about compensation, retirement modernization,” he said. “That’s not on their mind. As I talk to thousands of audiences, they want to know into whose neck do we put a boot next.

“They want to know about what new equipment are we getting, are we continuing to modernize. Just because the budget sucks, does that mean we’re not going to get our new gear?”

Barrett’s comments came in contrast to his counterparts in the other services, who conceded to senators that lower pay raises, scaled-back commissary offerings and smaller housing stipends would be problematic for many servicemembers.

Instead, Barrett argued that the lower quality of life would be beneficial to Marines.

“I truly believe it will raise discipline,” he said. “You’ll have better spending habits. You won’t be so wasteful.”

The man yearns for robot Marines, no doubt.

Warning From Beyond the Grave: Political Correctness As Bad As Communism or Fascism

So says the author of the "Flashman" books, George MacDonald Fraser:

‘My chief concern is the kind of prejudice rooted in the fear of being thought illiberal. Such attitudes are dangerous and intellectually dishonest.

'But then, political correctness is by definition dishonest and is, I believe, the most insidious doctrine to plague the Western world since those abominable soul mates communism and fascism with which it has more in common than its dupes seem to realise.

‘It cannot face truth; it rejects what is, simply because what is does not suit what the politically correct thinking ought to be.’

Where Are Christians Standing Up For the Survival of Their Churches?

China, that's where.

Thousands of Chinese Christians have mounted an extraordinary, round-the-clock defence of a church in a city known as the 'Jerusalem of the East' after Communist Party officials threatened to bulldoze their place of worship.

In an episode that underlines the fierce and long-standing friction between China's officially atheist Communist Party and its rapidly growing Christian congregation, Bible-carrying believers this week flocked to the Sanjiang church in Wenzhou hoping to protect it from the bulldozers.

Their 24-hour guard began earlier this week when a demolition notice was plastered onto the newly-constructed church which worshippers say cost around 30 million yuan (£2.91 million) and almost six years to build.

Officials claimed the church had been built illegally and used red paint to daub the words: "Demolish" and "Illegal construction" onto its towering facade.

The threat triggered a furious reaction in Wenzhou, a booming port city known for its vibrant Christian community, said to be China's largest.

"To Learn and Labor Truly To Get Our Living."

Sci-fi novelist Sarah Hoyt writes a wonderful essay emphasizing the Protestant work ethic that made the US great, and can make it great again.

In that one precept is the cure for the lack of “meaning” in modern life. You don’t need to be striving for the pinnacle, and you don’t need to create anything astounding. The only thing you owe your “neighbors” is to do the best you can and not be a burden.

And in that precept is the cure for the illusions of our would-be aristos who think that to whom they were born, their contacts, the colleges they entered by virtue of influence and contacts, make them special. Since it’s less likely they’re learning and laboring TRULY, they’re worthy of less respect than those who attend humbler schools or work manual jobs but give it their all.

In this is the cure for the continuously extended hand and the whine of the would be artist. “I am making good art. People just don’t pay me.” Well, fine, then learn and labor to get your own living and do your art on the side. In this is the cure to the entire inversion where people expect society to provide for them, instead of trying to do their duty.

Another Shooter At Fort Hood

Wonder if it's another Muslim jihadi whether the Army will classify it as terrorism this time?

Oyster Ice Cream?

Once a big deal in America.

One of those things you'd have to try before deciding whether it was good or disgusting.

I Would Like To Apologize...

...to anyone who was taken in by my April 1st post about purchasing a Dodge Challenger. In truth I haven't purchased a new car. The Challenger is one of those cars I'd buy if I won the lottery, which I haven't done, either. Probably I should have made the post less believable by talking of purchasing a Bentley or some other such ridiculously-priced car. Or come out of the closet as a lesbian, perhaps.

Sorry about that.

Arrival

My new ride:

Only 40,000 miles on it. Since it's basically painted in Confederate grey, I think I'll name it The General Joseph E. Johnston (General Lee was already taken, obviously). Some might ask, given the inclinations of this blog, why I didn't name it after Nathan Bedford Forrest? I thought for once I'd try to show a little subtlety, and Johnston was a much-misunderstood and unappreciated Confederate leader. You can read about him in Wikipedia, for a start.
