How They Found USS Grunion

Lost during WWII in the Bering Sea while engaged in battle with the Japanese.

I guess no one in the US Navy thought to look for the Grunion by checking Japanese sources.

And, the "circular run" torpedo that doomed the Grunion was not all that different from the one that caused the sinking of USS Tang and the capture of its crew by the Japanese, including skipper Richard H. O'Kane, who was subsequently awarded the Medal of Honor.

Orton Will Be Transformed, Better...

...but you'll likely never be able to see it in its transformed state.

Orton Plantation, once a tourist attraction on the west bank of the Cape Fear River near Wilmington, North Carolina, is undergoing extensive renovations under its new owner, who wishes to bring back the longleaf pine forest and rice cultivation of 200 years ago.

He doesn't desire to bring back the tourists, however, so if you haven't been to Orton already, you're not likely to be invited now.

The Cripping and Blooding of America, 2050

It's the year 2050 in the Divided States of America. The country's motto, for so many years "e pluribus unum," is now de unum, duo. The country, although still nominally a single entity, is in fact divided in two along ideological grounds. Like the Yangs and Comms in the old "Star Trek" episode "Omega Glory," the Left and the Right are no longer on speaking terms, unless it is to hurl epithets, to browbeat and bullyrag.

Businesses and restaurants are prominently marked in one of two colors, blue for the Left and red for the Right. Inside Blue businesses you'll find the vidscreens turned to leftist media channels, the descendants of MSNBC although the letter designations have changed. In Red businesses the vidscreens are turned to Fox News, which has kept its name for all these years, tradition being important to the Right. If you step into a Blue business you had best not be wearing any clothing colored red; likewise it's best not to enter a Red business wearing blue clothing.

Historians tend to agree that restaurants began to cater to either Red or Blue around 2012, when the Christian business Chik-Fil-A was the target of Blue outrage and boycotts. Several Chik-Fil-A restaurants were in fact burned during mob violence on a so-called "Chik-Fil-A Appreciation Day," in which right-leaning people were encourage to eat at Chik-Fil-A out of solidarity for its corporate views. Violence broke out between Right and Left on this day, resulting in several deaths and three Chik-Fil-A restaurants being firebombed by Leftist agitators.

America began self-segregating in earnest not long afterwards. It had been years since right-wing politicians could reasonably expect to win office in places like California, Massachusetts or New York, so they stopped even bothering, and moved to the Old South or the West where their views were welcome. By the same token, after decades of gerrymandering it became obvious that Leftists could not compete politically in the "flyover states" as they sneeringly called them. The widespread deportations of illegal immigrants from the flyover states changed the demographics of those areas drastically, as did the race riots that occurred in the Old South as a result of the black "Flash Mob" phenomenon (this was black violence perpetrated upon whites, usually with the encouragement of black politicians and church leaders. The left-leaning media outlets of the time refused to report on the racial aspects of the flash mobs, and thus came to be seen as collaborators in the flash mob violence, and were eventually targeted by outraged whites during the so-called "MSM Purge" of 2021).

Well, that's a good start, I think. You can probably tell I've read my share of Tom Kratman and Oh John Ringo No! novels in the recent past. *grins*

First He Wanted To Spread the Wealth Around...

...now he wants to spread the school expulsions around in the same sort of fashion.

President Barack Obama is backing a controversial campaign by progressives to regulate schools’ disciplinary actions so that members of major racial and ethnic groups are penalized at equal rates, regardless of individuals’ behavior.

His July 26 executive order established a government panel to promote “a positive school climate that does not rely on methods that result in disparate use of disciplinary tools.”

“African Americans lack equal access to highly effective teachers and principals, safe schools, and challenging college-preparatory classes, and they disproportionately experience school discipline,” said the order, titled “White House Initiative On Educational Excellence.”

Expulsion quotas.

*shakes head in disgust*

I guess his next big idea will be to spread justice around, so he'll advocate arrest quotas and jail time for whites because blacks are disproportionately sent to prison.

Handgun Trumps Axe

In Lancaster, SC:

Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Lancaster man Tuesday after he walked into a restaurant and demanded money while wielding an axe, police say.

David Leroy Deese, 45, of 2562 Cane Mill Road in Lancaster, is charged with armed robbery and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, according to a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Deese walked into Rusty’s Grill at 2423 Pineview Drive around 5:34 a.m. with axe in hand. That’s when the business owner took out a handgun and challenged Deese, the release states.

Deese soon began apologizing, saying that he was “on drugs,” police say. He then fled the scene.

Dude doesn't know how lucky he is to be alive at this point, I think. Restaurant owner could have blown him away and no one would have said a thing except nice grouping.

When Betty Betrayed Us

Betty Crocker, that is.

Have you taken a close look at a box of cake mix lately?

I’ll confess that I hadn’t. You know how it is: You get used to something and you don’t think to check it.

Then a reader called to tell me a recipe that called for an 18.25-ounce box of cake mix was wrong. She’d gone to the store and checked: All the cake mixes were 15.2 or 16.5 ounces.

No, no, no, I insisted. The standard cake mix is 18.25 ounces. Has been for years. I don’t need to check it.

Sorry, but I did need to check. A quick message to Anne Byrn of Nashville, who has made a career out of her “Cake Mix Doctor” books, turned up the news. Quietly, with no announcement, the cake mix companies have made their packages smaller.

It started a year ago with Betty Crocker, followed by Duncan Hines. Pillsbury joined them last month.

The problem, of course, is the cost of food. Rather than increase the price, the companies made the product smaller and kept the cost the same.

Betty, you bitch.

Buried Pirate Treasure!

At Fowler's Bluff on the banks of the Suwanee River in Florida?

They're a-digging...

A pirate's curse is afoot, and it could be keeping some valuable booty several feet underground.

Here in this swampy hamlet on the east bank of the Suwannee River, where the air thickens with mosquitoes, a legend of buried treasure is firmly entrenched in local lore.

For years, through many landowners, treasure hunters have tried and failed to come up with the loot they believe was buried by 1800s French privateer Jean Lafitte — some say because such endeavors carry a curse preventing the treasure from being uncovered.

None have dug up the treasure, with the exception of one rumored recovery that may or may not have happened.

Dead At the Bottom of a Well

Over in Rockingham, NC, a hiker made a gruesome discovery.

Authorities are investigating the discovery of skeletal remains near an abandoned cotton mill in Richmond County.

The Richmond County Journal reported that a 26-year-old Charlotte man who was exploring the mill and taking photos discovered the remains.

The man, Walter Burlington, says he saw pants, a belt and a rib cage Thursday afternoon. Rockingham police Chief Billy Kelly says Burlington found the remains in a well.

I blogged on a similar story several years ago. In that case a Spaniard who fell into a well while hunting ended up blowing his brains out after three days when no one responded to his calls for help.

Did this person suffer a similar fate, or was he a murder victim who was thrown into the well to hide the body? More details will be needed, and with the remains in a skeletal condition, determining cause of death may be problematic.

Invasive Species? Hunt 'Em Down and Eat 'Em!

The inaugural Lionfish Derby in Wilmington, NC.

Early Saturday morning, about 20 scuba divers armed with spear guns will embark from Masonboro Inlet on a sea safari. Their mission: to lance and kill as many lionfish as possible.

"We're trying to do our part to control the lionfish in this area," said Inman Campbell, shop manager at Scuba-Now in Wilmington, who organized Saturday's inaugural Lionfish Derby. "They're starting to take over."

The lionfish, a spiny, brown-and-white striped animal native to the South Pacific and Indian oceans, has been present in North Carolina waters since at least the early 2000s. While visually stunning, the invasive species is a prolific breeder and a voracious eater that can quickly and easily thin populations of native fish. Lionfish are covered in venomous spikes and thus have very few predators in Carolina waters, which can make it difficult to control their population sprawl.

It's a good start. Another way to reduce their numbers is to exempt lionfish from any sort of catch limit for both commercial and hobby fishermen.

WINSTON-SALEM -- Winston-Salem police say a 67-year-old man has been shot to death after he attacked a man with a sword.

Report: FBI Refused To Investigate Fort Hood Shooter...

...because of political correctness:

The FBI was too concerned about political correctness and did not launch an investigation into a man who was later charged with killing 13 people in a 2009 attack at the Fort Hood military installation in Texas, despite significant warning signs that he was an Islamic extremist bent on killing civilians, according to a lawmaker briefed on a new report about the terrorist attack.
In emails to a known terrorist, Army Maj. Nidal Hasan expressed his support for suicide bombings and killing civilians, while the terrorist, Anwar al-Awlaki, encouraged Hasan to stay in touch, Republican Rep. Michael McCaul, told The Associated Press on Wednesday after he was briefed on the findings of a new review of the attack.
The review was done by former FBI Director William Webster and was more than two years in the making. FBI Director Robert Mueller asked that Webster conduct an independent review, and the bureau is expected to release an unclassified version this week.

Well, when you have a President who bows before the king of Saudi Arabia and whose Justice Department makes a point of censoring Muslim extremism from terrorism manuals and military classes on terrorism, what did you expect?

It happens a lot on lonely roads, especially at night. If you see a woman by a car late at night and it looks as if she needs help...stop your car a mile down from where you saw her and call the police for her. That's what they are paid for. The woman won't suffer too much misery in the few minutes it takes a patrol car to show up, and you can go your way feeling good that you were able to help.

I've Figured It Out

In whining about Obama's Bain attacks, and demanding apologies for same, Mitt Romney is setting himself up as the Ashley Wilkes to Obama's Rhett Butler:

In a sense, he is the character best personifying the tragedy of the Southern high class after the Civil War. Coming from a privileged background, Ashley is an honorable and educated man. He is in clear contrast to Rhett Butler, who is decisive and full of life, but is vulgar and distasteful as well. Rhett is both ruthless and practical, and is willing to do whatever he must to survive, whereas Ashley is often impractical (even Melanie admits this on her deathbed), and would resist doing many things Rhett would consider doing, because they aren't "proper" or "gentlemanly".

Doesn't that just describe the difference between the two men? Mitt isn't going to win if he insists on bringing a knife to Obama's gunfight. Obama's already shown that he's going to play by Chicago smash-mouth rules, not Marquess of Queensberry Rules. The sooner Mitt realizes this, the sooner he can start winning.

Good Riddance To Bad Rubbish

Looks like a serial domestic abuser came up against Bladie Mae:

A man was found dead at a south Charlotte apartment complex Saturday morning, police said, after a woman called 911 saying she’d stabbed her boyfriend.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police called the incident a “domestic violence-related homicide.” The slain man was identified as Lonnie Denar McConico, 43. But police did not release the woman’s name Saturday evening, saying she had not been charged.

McConico’s criminal record dates back to the 1980s.

Since 1995, he’d been charged at least six times with assaulting a female, but he was only convicted in one case. During the same time period, he was charged three times with violating a domestic violence protective order. He was convicted in two of those cases.

His other convictions included assault inflicting serious injury in a 1988 incident, resisting an officer and felony drug possession.

Yessir, gotta watch out for ol' Bladie Mae:

When the Law-Abiding Are Armed...

...the robbers are shot and forced to flee.

And then they can tell their pitiful stories to a sympathetic press:

"I feel horrible. It doesn't feel good. It makes you think about life's decisions, and how you should live your life," Henderson said in an interview with the Star-Banner at the jail on Saturday afternoon.

Hours after his release from the hospital, Henderson, who talked about the pain he feels in his buttock and hip, said the plan was to "barge in, get the money and leave." He said "he never expected anyone to be armed."

"The gun was broken and rusty and wasn't loaded. Nobody was going to get hurt," he said, standing with crutches.

Retrieving the customers' phones was what he said was their "main priority." That way, he said, the customers could not call law enforcement officials.

It was an inside job, one of the two robbers having worked at the internet café before having been fired, so he knew there would be lots of money available. What he didn't know is that one of the patrons would be armed.

Sometimes Shark Eats You!

Some poor soul in Western Australia got himself eaten by a Great White Shark.

These days when I go to the beach it's usually in the late fall or winter, so swimming in the ocean is a moot point, but I think that even if I went in the summer when the water's relatively warm I'd avoid swimming these days. Wading in the shallows would be ok, perhaps, so as to limit the size of the sharks that can attack.

This poor surfer was bitten in half, and the shark wouldn't permit a nearby jet skier to retrieve the torso, I'd guess the shark was still hungry at that point. Apparently nothing left to ship home to the parents. Sad.

And yes, the machete was wielded by yet another Hispanic man. Imagine that.

This one reads like Jerry Clower's famous story "Marcel's Talkin' Chainsaw," but in this case the guy turned away from the bar was the Hispanic guy who decided to ram his truck into the bar, then attacked the bartender with the machete. "When I was a young buck, I worked at Burger King," writes JohnnyDollar at Reddit.com. "Here is how the oil rotation went. You had four vats of oil that you cooked fries in. And boy did you cook fries. Tons of them. After about 2 days worth, the oil got too dark for fries. So we switched it over to the ones for chicken. Since it was darker, it was ok. Then that goes on for a week. After a week of massive frying. The oil is black as motor oil. At that point, it's switched to the Fish Filet vat. That's the only thing you cook in that vat."

Good-Bye To Urinals On US Navy Ships

The "gender-neutral" USS Gerald R. Ford won't have urinals, just toilets.

No big deal as far as I'm concerned, as long as they don't implement a regulation that male sailors must urinate into the toilets while sitting down.

In the Mail

Holman Sailor's Bible.

Why? Because of this.

I'm not much of a believer, haven't been for years, but the way that all vestiges of the Christian religion are being driven out of public discourse in the US pisses me off.

And, looking into the book via the Amazon "Click To Look Inside!" feature, it seems an interesting blend of the Bible with military spirituality.

You want one of your own? Better hurry, after the current stocks of Sailor's, Soldier's, Airman's, Marine's and Coastguardsman's Bibles are gone, no mas. Finito.

Hunting Spanish Conquistadors In North Florida

On the trail of Hernando de Soto.

The Gainesville Sun offers a great article and multimedia presentation of archaeology digs around Orange Lake, and the discovery of one of de Soto's campsites.

Several galleries of photographs are included, as well as this video, which includes discussion of 16th century Spanish equipment, including matchlock muskets.

I should note that the "curator emeritus" who opens the video makes a mistake almost immediately, referring to mounted troops as "calvary" instead of "cavalry." Calvary was, of course, where Jesus of Nazareth was crucified.

I grew up in this area, and used to find Indian artifacts alongside roads after a heavy rain. Presumably these, also, were artifacts from the Potano tribes discussed in the article and video.

Oops, They Forgot It Was An Island

In Galveston, Texas, a man was shot at the Seawall on Friday evening. Having lived in Galveston briefly, I'd guess it was the Usual Suspects®, who come down every weekend from Houston during the summer beach season.

Unfortunately they forgot (if they ever really realized) that Galveston is an island, which means that it's very, very easy to limit escape options if you're travelling in a car.

Now That's How a Restraining Order...

...is supposed to work.

A man was shot recently after Cabarrus County authorities say he tried to break into a neighbor’s home. The victim had a restraining order against the would-be burglar, officials said.

See? You can't view a restraining order like it's a protective force field. You have to view it as similar to a deer tag for your hunting license.

Dude looks like Charlie Manson, don't he?

Stick a Fork In Him

Well, she did.

A Rock Hill mother is accused of stabbing her son in the chest late Thursday with a grilling fork.

Police went to the 400 block of Hall Street around 10:30 p.m. Thursday where they found 21-year-old Paul Mobley holding his chest and bleeding. Mobley told officers that his mother had stabbed him, according to a police report.

Denise Mobley, 44, was arrested and charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, police said. She told officers that her son had hit her over the head with a plastic chair before she stabbed him with a two-prong fork.

Probably a good thing she wasn't making kebabs, huh?

You Keep On Using That Word...

I do not think it means what you think it means.

Ann Coulter chooses the wrong word:

The French Revolution was a revolt of the mob. It was the primogenitor of the horrors of the Bolshevik revolution, Hitler’s Nazi Party, Mao’s cultural revolution, Pol Pot’s slaughter and America’s periodic mob uprisings from Shays’ rebellion to today’s dirty waifs in the “Occupy Wall Street” crowd.

She's confusing primogeniture with progenitor, and spelling it incorrectly in the bargain.

Iñigo, you tell her:

Well, I'd happily accept a NCIS or CSI TV contract, too. They'd have to custom-make my Armani suits, though, I'm pretty stout.

Independence Day Parable

Note: I originally posted this in 2006 in my LiveJournal, which was my writing outlet before I came to Blogger.

Independence Day Parable.
Probably a little heavy-handed and obvious. I apologize in advance.

Timmy and Tommy lived with their mother, whom they loved very much. They both did their chores and worked around the house, and did what they could to make their mother's life easier.

Timmy and Tommy viewed the world in different ways, and didn't agree on much at all. Timmy was basically a pessimist, always finding fault with his mother and how she ran the household. He never hesitated to point out her faults, even in a public place where other people could hear him. Tommy was basically an optimist, always trying to find the good in his mother and the way that she ran the household. Tommy was always careful to never criticize his mother in public.

Because of their different outlooks on life, Timmy and Tommy had vicious arguments at times, in which Tommy would accuse Timmy of not loving their mother and only pointing out faults, which drove Timmy into a fury. In his turn he would call Tommy an idiot and stupid for not wanting to recognize the "truth" about their mother.

Over time the people in the community lost their respect for the mother and her sons, and would repeat the things that Timmy said of the mother.

One day the mother, walking down a sidewalk, was knocked down and had her purse stolen. When she fell she broke her hip.

"She had it coming," many people said.

"How dare you? For shame!" said other people.

Tommy blamed the mugger for the crime.

Timmy blamed his mother for walking in a dangerous area of town.

The mother had to have hip-replacement surgery. She loved her sons unreservedly.

Andy Griffith, 1926-2012: R.I.P.

One of America's iconic actors has passed away.

I met him once, working as a desk clerk here in Charlotte, at what was then the Radisson Hotel uptown. He was staying in the penthouse suite and came down to the desk to get a luggage cart before the bell staff had arrived for the day. I offered to help him, but he said he'd be fine on his own.

In Mt. Airy, NC, they'll be mourning the loss of their hometown boy made good. Here are some photos I took on an expedition to Mt. Airy a few years ago.

The Druid Diddling the Kids

Over in Wilmington, NC, the "urban arborist" has been arrested for child sexual abuse.

The city of Wilmington's urban arborist was arrested Thursday on a fugitive warrant stemming from charges of child sexual abuse, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Brion Capo, 57, was arrested on the out-of-state warrant for charges of one count of sodomy and one count of sex abuse of a child under 12, according to Russ Fields of the U.S. Marshals Service.

The charges involve one victim out of the Mobile, Ala., area, Fields said via email. The arrest warrant was issued June 22 after a Mobile County, Ala., grand jury came down with an indictment, Bryan Konig, deputy U.S. Marshal, said. It is unclear when the alleged incident occurred.
