I Always Preferred Ted Williams, Anyway
Newly revealed records indicate that Joe DiMaggio was a poor example of a soldier during WWII, even though he never saw battle and was assigned to duties that most men would be happy to have. He performed his duties grudgingly and tended to malinger.

Williams served in WWII and Korea. He never saw combat in WWII, but did in Korea. He didn't want to go, but never complained about it publicly.
Oh, and he was a better player than DiMaggio.
@TOTWTYTR: I'll agree that Ted was the better hitter - - batting averages don't lie -- but DiMaggio was the better overall player, being one of the all-time great center fielders. Ted, by even his own admission, was a competent left fielder but didn't focus much on that aspect of the game. He'd still be on my all-time all-great team.
