Status Report: Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower

The transition from a deserted navigation aid to a tourist destination.

I see that the Diamond Shoals station was just up for auction. Pity I missed it. I'd have put down the minimum bid plus a little to have me a place like that.

@Murphy's Law: I blogged on the Diamond Shoals auction back on the 16th, sorry you missed it. I thought it would make a good James Bond villain starter kit.

Many of these historic landmarks were used of course for navigation, specifically Loran C prior to the installation of the GPS constellation. Athough not as accurate as GPS, these platforms provided the most accurate means of fixing a ships position.

@Senior: Before the tower was built there was a lightship stationed there, and at Diamond Shoals, as well. Robert Ruark mentions the lightship and the shoals in his classic coming-of-age book The Old Man and the Boy.
