The John Holmes...

...of woodpeckers.

A woodpecker with a freakishly long beak was spotted eating from a domestic garden feeder in Rosedale, near Pickering, North Yorkshire.

The bird looks like a cross between cartoon character Woody the Woodpecker and Pinocchio.

Experts today claimed the beak was the biggest they had ever seen and are surprised it can fly, let alone feed.

I have an aunt with a similar affliction, only, instead of an overlarge beak, she has an overlarge sense of her own importance. I shall now always think of that bird whenever I encounter my aunt and have a private giggle.
