...the water ain't fine.
Why jumping into Wilmington, North Carolina's Cape Fear River...is to be feared.
I really don't have a lot of experience with large rivers. I lived on a lake in my youth in Florida, and it was a big lake, but we don't have large rivers in the state, save for the St. John's. Most of the rest are fairly small, as rivers go.

I grew up in Missouri, a place with many rivers both large and small (Missouri and Mississippi Rivers are the biggest, of course).
Ol' Muddy at St. Louis is known for its treacherous undertow and surprising depth. Yet some much smaller rivers (the Meramec River in east central MO) is also known for undertow in places where its average depth is interrupted by sinkholes from which most swimmers never escape.
I tend to stay out of anything bigger than "creek".
