And Bears! Oh My!

NEW ORLEANS — Having a 400-pound black bear living in the middle of the sprawling Louisiana State Penitentiary strikes Warden Burl Cain as a very good thing.

"I love that bear being right where it is," Cain said on Monday. "I tell you what, none of our inmates are going to try to get out after dark and wander around when they might run into a big old bear. It's like having another guard at no cost to the taxpayer."

It should be noted that black bears only rarely attack people, but the presence of the bears might provide a tiny deterrence in the minds of the humans who end up in Angola Prison.

The article goes on to mention a substantial population of alligators, rattle snakes and vicious wild pigs, which apparently are part of the prison's unpaid prison escapee deterrence team.

So we'll have none of that skippin' down the Yellow Brick Road to freedom, y'hear?
