I guess no one in the US Navy thought to look for the Grunion by checking Japanese sources.
And, the "circular run" torpedo that doomed the Grunion was not all that different from the one that caused the sinking of USS Tang and the capture of its crew by the Japanese, including skipper Richard H. O'Kane, who was subsequently awarded the Medal of Honor.
