Study: Turn Fort Monroe Into Parkland

Story.

The US Army is due to leave historic Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia, in two years as part of the base-closings plan approved by Congress. A study has concluded that the best use for Fort Monroe is as public parkland.

That's good. Fort Monroe was a favorite place of mine when I was stationed in Norfolk with the Navy. If you haven't ever seen it, it is a moated brick star-shaped fortress built in 1834. Edgar Allan Poe was stationed there, Robert E. Lee worked there, and Confederate president Jefferson Davis was imprisoned there after the Civil War.
