Just as a first impression, the weapons seem inappropriate for the era. When I think of the early period Holmes stories I'm expecting to see Martinis, Webleys and Gatlings, not bolt-action rifles, Maxims and modern mortars.

You must not have seen the movie of which this is a sequel. Fidelity to either Conan Doyle or history was not a priority. But it was a terrifically entertaining film.
@wally: I did see it, Wally, and enjoyed it. Doesn't mean I can't nitpick it for lack of historical accuracy. And my readers who might not have seen the first movie might be moved to point out the discrepancy, also, and I wanted to be ahead of them in pointing it out.
As a sketcher myself, I particularly liked the credit sequence treatment.
I think it's because the noises they make, the dramatic snicker-snack of a semi-auto or a shotgun racking is part of the movie vernacular.
If they backed-off and did weird old-fashioned gun-noises nobody would get it. They need to pre-load the movie-mental imagery with the sounds people have already adapted to hearing. It's utterly conventional.
