Charles Bronson.
I loved all the stuff he did up to the point that he grew that stupid mustache. The mustache ruined his face. Bronson should be clean-shaven, as he was in The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, and Once Upon A Time In The West.
That extreme close-up came courtesy of Sergio Leone in the latter movie, in the final showdown scene. I won't spoil it for you, go ahead and watch it. You'd never imagine Henry Fonda as an evil son-of-a-bitch, but here the man is, doing it to perfection:
I can watch this clip over and over again. There's a great collection of "final showdown" gunfight scenes on YouTube: Quigley Down Under, for example. If you have a personal favorite it's probably there.
