Horse Whisperer author Nicholas Evans is critically ill after eating wild mushrooms.
In this case Evans dined on Destroying Angels:
It's what most people recognize as a yard toadstool. My maternal grandfather ate some one time and nearly died, so I have personal experience with the little horrors.
You don't have to have a doctorate in botany to identify safe mushrooms, but unless you've hunted mushrooms with an experienced guide and can confidently distinguish some of the common edibles, you're best off not indulging in this hobby.
