Today's Homonyms: Rein, Rain, Reign

We reined in (stopped by pulling on reins) our horses when we saw the rain in the Kingdom of Squat, where King Adelbert reigns in (rules) great peace and prosperity.

Yet another example of what happens when a society builds a language by cobbling it together from other sources.

Lewis Grizzard (may he rest in peace) once opined that "he threw the ball through the window" would be MUCH easier to understand if people would speak Southern: "he thowed it thew the windah". He was right.

@Rev. Paul: this one was inspired by an article at Reason magazine online, where the writer spoke of efforts to "reign in" spending. The further we get away from our rural roots the easier it is to make such mistakes.

Lewis Grizzard was a treasure, although he was less of a redneck than he portrayed himself to be. More of a city Southerner, similar to myself, actually.
