Jerk. Almost as arrogant as Joe Jackson, in 1983. Did a concert in a large city (NY?) and required the audience to not cheer, applaud or make a sound during his set.
Jackson was attempting to record a "Live" album.
I think an artist can make rules for the audience to follow, but only if it is a free concert.

Van has always been pretty arrogant. In the movie The Last Waltz with The Band, he stomped off the stage as soon as he finished singing Caravans, leaving Robbie Robertson and the rest of the musicians scratching their heads and wondering what happened.
