Scheller Wants An Angel

USMC Lieutenant-Colonel Stuart Scheller, who is in the brig awaiting court-martail for speaking out after the disastrous Afghanistan pull-out, has some harsh words for former President Trump and his family:

"President Trump. I was told by everyone to kiss the ring because of your following and power. I refuse. While I respect your foreign policy positions, I hate how you divided the country. I don’t need or want your help. You do not have the ability to pull US together. You may even win the next election. But your generation’s time is running out. Tell your son to stop tweeting about me. Your whole family knows nothing about US or our sacrifices. I could never work with you. I’d rather sit in jail and be released with a dishonorable than make compromises in my beliefs."

When that statement got lots of negative commentary, Col. Scheller doubled down:

"I’ve had such a strong reaction to my comments against President Trump I felt a follow up clarification was required. No, President Trump didn’t divide the country. But President Trump, in my humble opinion, is incapable of bringing us back together. Did he expose the corruption in the DOJ, media, and other places… yes. Was he the right person to expose the corruption at that time… maybe. Is he honest, accountable, and full of integrity… no. Would I want to work for a leader like that… no. I want a leader that will bring US together. Someone who has the courage to defend our country when called. My sons deserve that type of leader running the country in the future. That type of person is the only leader who I want in my corner. I respect all opinions. I’m not asking you to agree with me, but to at least consider my perspective. Much love."

In a famous debate between TV talk show host Phil Donahue and economist Milton Friedman, Friedman asked "Tell me, just where will you find these angels who will organize society for you? I don't even trust you to do that." In his second statement, Scheller is obviously looking for just such an angel. The problem is that such angels are in very short supply here on Earth where they are most needed, and so we must muddle along with lesser mortals.

Sickle Vs. Rabid Bobcat - - Sickle Wins

Grandma calls on druid heritage to drive off a rabid bobcat.

Elsie Dabrowski went out to her chicken coop Sunday night as she does every night around dusk, closed up the coop and bent down to cut weeds with a sickle, said her son, Gene Dabrowski.

The animal lunged at Elsie, bit her left cheek, scratched her throat and bit her back.

“I kept thinking why? Why is it attacking me? It attacked me for no reason. I thought, ‘Why, why,’” said Elsie, a former Marine, on Monday evening.

Elsie beat the cat off her with the sickle, and Gene’s five dogs chased it under a nearby porch. He lives only 300 feet away in a separate house, heard the commotion, rushed to the scene and killed the animal with two blasts of a shotgun.

Sergeant-Major of the Marine Corps: A Poor Marine Is a Motivated Marine

That's what he thinks. Really.

Lower pay and slimmed-down benefits will make Marines more disciplined and less wasteful, according to the Corps’ top enlisted Marine.

In comments before a Senate Armed Services Committee panel on Wednesday, Sgt. Maj. of the Marine Corps Micheal Barrett dismissed lawmaker concerns that proposed compensation trims in the Pentagon’s fiscal 2015 budget proposal would hurt troops’ morale or desire to serve.

“Marines don’t run around asking about compensation, retirement modernization,” he said. “That’s not on their mind. As I talk to thousands of audiences, they want to know into whose neck do we put a boot next.

“They want to know about what new equipment are we getting, are we continuing to modernize. Just because the budget sucks, does that mean we’re not going to get our new gear?”

Barrett’s comments came in contrast to his counterparts in the other services, who conceded to senators that lower pay raises, scaled-back commissary offerings and smaller housing stipends would be problematic for many servicemembers.

Instead, Barrett argued that the lower quality of life would be beneficial to Marines.

“I truly believe it will raise discipline,” he said. “You’ll have better spending habits. You won’t be so wasteful.”

The man yearns for robot Marines, no doubt.

When You Don't Trust "Your" Marines...

...you might be a tyrant.*

“Didn't know the Marines had to take the bolts out of their rifles for the Inaugural,” an email forwarded to Gun Rights Examiner from a United States Marine Corps source observed. “Wonder if someone can explain why [they] would be marching in the inaugural parade with no bolts in their rifles!”

The email linked to a YouTube video of the 57th Presidential Inaugural Parade, embedded in this column, featuring Bravo Company Marines from the Marine Barracks Washington. Sure enough, the observation in the email is confirmed by watching the video, with screen shots provided in the photo and slide show accompanying this article.

This prompted an internet search to see if others had also noticed, and the Blur-Brain blog had.

“The bolts have been removed from the rifles rendering them unable to fire a round,” the post stated. “Apparently Obama’s Secret Service doesn’t trust the USMC. Simply searching each guy to make sure he didn’t have a live round hidden on him wasn’t enough, they had to make sure the guns were inoperable.

Headline of the Day

"Medal of Honor recipients talk to Marines about suicide."

Reports that they told the Marines "If Obama was OUR Commander-In-Chief we'd suicide, too" went unconfirmed as of this writing.

Story of the Day

Everett Grob last served in the military 59 years ago, but the values the Marine Corps instilled have stuck with him every day of his life.

In recent months, the 96-year-old has had to draw on the principles of courage and inner strength more than ever before.

Grob was married to his wife, Helen, for 73 years. They grew up in the Pelham Bay section of New York City and had known each other since she was 8 and he was 9.

When she died in June, Grob had to figure out a way to deal with the gigantic hole in his life. He coped the same way he dealt with life-and-death battles of World War II.

“Being a Marine has kept me moving, not wanting to give in,” he said.

Grob lives in Spotsylvania County and lives a regimented routine—even though he hasn’t been in service since 1953. He’s up at the same time every day, always makes his bed and never leaves the house without a crease in his pants and a shine on his shoes.

Every day, he visits Helen’s grave at Sunset Memorial Gardens. With their dog, Skeeter, at his side, he talks about the weather and chores he’s done around the house.

Grob also regularly visits Woodmont Healthcare Center, where Helen spent the last 14 months of her life. He wants the workers to know how grateful he is for their kindness and care.

Meanwhile, In Penny Lane...

Well, not really Penny Lane, but those two words popped out at me in the following article from the Wilmington, NC, newspaper:

Surf City | A Camp Lejeune Marine wanted in an assault on a cab driver earlier this month has been charged.

Gunnery Sgt. Adam John Kinosh, 31, of Penny Lane in Holly Ridge, was charged Tuesday by the Surf City Police Department with assault inflicting serious bodily injury. Bond was set at $20,000.

He is accused of assaulting Charles Hawkesworth, shattering his left cheek bone and nasal passage, both of which required reconstructive surgery, according to warrants.

Excuse this parody:

In Penny Lane there is a jarhead in a taxicab,
And he's beating the poor driver like a rug;
And all the people that come and go
Stop and say, Oh, No!

Rest In Peace, Little Marine

Boy made honorary Marine before death.

FLORA, Ind. (WLFI) - 12-year-old Cody Green has always admired the strength and courage of the marines. At 12:35 Saturday afternoon, it was the Marines admiring the strength and courage of Cody.

Cody had leukemia since he was 22 months old, but beat the disease three times. Although he was cancer-free, the chemotherapy lowered his immune system and Saturday afternoon, he died from a fungus that attacked his brain. Members of the Marines decided to step in and do something.

"They decided Cody, with the strength and honor and courage he showed through the whole thing, he should be a Marine," said Cody's father David Snowberger.

Cody was given Marine navigator wings and was made an honorary member of the United States Marine Corps. For one Marine, that wasn't enough, so he did even more.

"The night before Cody passed, he stood guard at Cody's door at the hospital all night long for eight hours straight," said Snowberger.

Damn. I Have something in my eye.

Headline of the Day

"Guam official: 60% of Marines will rotate."

I wonder if the rotating Marines will keep the island from capsizing?

And what if they rotate the wrong way? Widdershins instead of deosil? (clockwise vs. counter-clockwise, for you fans of modern parlance) Will the island capsize even faster if the Marines rotate in the wrong direction, sort of like righty-tighty, lefty-loosy?

What Has Lots of Snakes, Few Birds, and Might Tip Over?

Answer: Guam.

Apparently the island isn't stabilized yet, because it isn't ready to handle the weight of the Marines currently stationed on Okinawa.

"We don't let Marines slack because we care about each other," Meyer said.

A Marine NCO was found not guilty of hazing a Marine that committed suicide after being found asleep on duty.

The panel of three officers and five enlisted Marines found Lance Cpl. Carlos Orozco III not guilty at a court-martial at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay.

He was accused of humiliating and demeaning Lance Cpl. Harry Lew by pouring sand on his face and forcing him to do push-ups and leg lifts. Orozco was acquitted of charges involving the assault, cruel treatment and humiliation of Lew, of Santa Clara, Calif. Lew fatally shot himself at their remote Afghanistan patrol base on April 3. He was a nephew of U.S. Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif.

Orozco was the last of three Marines to be court-martialed for the alleged hazing of Lew. Another lance corporal last month pleaded guilty to assault after admitting he punched and kicked Lew. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail and a reduction in rank to private first class. A jury in a separate trial later found their squad leader, a sergeant, not guilty of humiliating and demeaning Lew.

Prosecuting attorney Maj. Hanorah Tyer-Witek told the jury in closing arguments that witnesses saw Orozco ordering Lew to do push-ups after Lew had been digging a foxhole for two hours without eating or drinking anything.

Orozco was annoyed and fed up that Lew had fallen asleep on watch for the fourth time since he arrived at Patrol Base Gowragi, she said.

Defense attorney Capt. Aaron Meyer told jurors that government witnesses gave conflicting testimony and Orozco was only trying to keep Lew awake so their base wouldn't be attacked by Taliban fighters.

If Orozco had allowed Lew to fall asleep again, his command would have asked him why he didn't do more to keep him awake, Meyer said.

The Proper Response...

...to the Taliban Tinklers, from Congressman Allen West, (R-FL):

“The Marines were wrong. Give them a maximum punishment under field grade level Article 15 (non-judicial punishment), place a General Officer level letter of reprimand in their personnel file, and have them in full dress uniform stand before their Battalion, each personally apologize to God, Country, and Corps videotaped and conclude by singing the full US Marine Corps Hymn without a teleprompter.

“As for everyone else, unless you have been shot at by the Taliban, shut your mouth, war is hell.”

It should be pointed out that West was a Lt. Colonel in the US Army and served in Iraq, so his viewpoint is more informed that of most members of Congress.

Damn, Radioactive Piss?

From the Raleigh, North Carolina, News and Observer, comes today's scary headline:

"Urination video prompts fear of fallout."

What are they feeding these Marines these days? Back when I served in the Navy, all we had to worry about was was the proverbial saltpeter.

Poll of the Day

A tale of military incontinence. On the one side, we have US Army PFC Bradley Manning, who leaked thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks. On the other side, we have US Marines who urinated on the bodies of dead Taliban.

Your task in this poll is to predict which will receive the more dire punishment by the US military: Manning, or the Marines?

You Don't Want 'Em? We'll Take 'Em Off Your Hands

The US Navy and US Marine Corps agree to buy all of the Royal Navy Harrier jets, plus spare parts.

I used to watch Harriers take off and land when I was in the Navy, serving on board USS Saipan (LHA2) and USS Nassau (LHA4). Impressive, to say the very least. I'm sorry that Great Britain is in such distress that it can't afford them any more, but glad we got them so we can extend their use in our own fleet.

Today's "I Sh*t You Not" Story

Training US Marines On Getting Along With Afghanis.

Mubarak also said the Marines should never spit or urinate to the west, the direction of Mecca that Muslims in Afghanistan face when they pray.

In addition, when sharing a base with Afghan army troops, Marines shouldn't sleep with their feet pointed west, because that also is considered offensive, he said.
