Florida's Indigenous Tortoise
The Gopher Tortoise, now endangered.
I played with them often as a child in Florida. The dig burrows in the sandy soil, which are also used by snakes, particularly Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes and the endangered Indigo Snake.

You Ain't Even Safe In a Tree
Crocodilians - - crocodiles, alligators, caimans and the like - - can climb trees.

'E's Stunned!
But, unlike the parrot in the famous Monty Python "Dead Parrot" sketch, these sea turtles are, in fact, stunned from sea water suddenly cold from sharp drops in the weather:
The recent cold spell has kept area aquariums and the sea turtle hospital on Topsail Island busy helping cold-stunned sea turtles from North Carolina and other locations along the East Coast.
Ten live, cold-stunned juvenile green turtles were found Saturday on the beach south of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse.
According to information from Cape Lookout National Seashore, park volunteers Dallas and Marjorie Spruill rescued the stranded turtles and contacted park officials. Rangers Wade Keeler and Kerby Price responded and carried the turtles back to the park offices on Harkers Island.
Matthew Godfrey, state sea turtle biologist and representative of the N.C. Sea Stranding and Salvage Network, picked up the turtles. The turtles were given an initial assessment by a veterinarian and then transferred to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center on Topsail Island.
The turtles are also being cared for at a couple of NC state aquariums, at Fort Fisher and Pine Knoll Shores.
And yes, here's the Dead Parrot sketch mentioned above:

Yer Science Experiment of the Day
Which are hit more often in the road by motorists: snakes or turtles?
Speaking for myself, I try to avoid all reptiles, even venomous snakes. I've even rescued a turtle or two, if I'm on a quiet back road. How about a poll?
h/t The Anchoress.
update:
saw this comment in a follow-up:
if you want to save the turtles, start making foam replicas that have large steel spikes inside and leave on the center lane. when enough people blow their tires on turtles they are trying to kill they will stop running them over. nobody tries to squash a deer with their car. I d wonder though if some people running over turtles are just bad drivers. look at all the highway patrol officers stopped on the side of the road giving tickets or assisting drivers that have cars slam into them.
Caltrop turtles!

Jaws, North Carolina Version
You can keep your Great White Sharks. At North Carolina beaches, we have alligators!
A 10-foot alligator crawled out of the waves on Holden Beach Wednesday morning, ambling in and out of the surf and attracting dozens of onlookers before eventually being captured by state wildlife officials.
"He had a big ol' mouth with teeth popping. We had a bit of excitement down here," said David Hewett, Holden Beach's town manager. "It's not the biggest gator I've ever seen, but he was big enough."
Big ol' mouth with teeth poppin'.
*grins*
Here's a pic of Mr. Gator:

Not to put too fine a point on it, but you sun worshipers start looking like that around age 50 if you don't take it easy, if you know what I mean.

Headline of the Day
More Than 1000 Turtles Slowly Escape Captivity.
SUMMERVILLE, Ga. -- More than 1,000 turtles made a slow-speed escape from their turtle farm in northwest Georgia.
Turtle farmer David Driver tells sheriff's officials he suspects vandals might be to blame for tearing down fences around his turtle ponds in Summerville.
Authorities say that allowed the turtles - including snappers, Eastern paints and yellow-bellied sliders - to leave the farm and make a beeline to nearby ponds and creeks.

That's All He Got Left 'Cause Alligator Bit It
Right* arm gone clean up to the elbow.
MOORE HAVEN, Fla. – Pink gauze wrapping the stump where his arm hung just a few hours before, Kaleb "Fred" Langdale, 17, managed a weak smile and asked his aunt to snap a quick photo with her iPhone before he underwent surgery to repair the damage.
Langdale's request to his aunt, LaDawn Hayes: Post the photo to Facebook so his friends can see he's OK.
It appeared the soon-to-be senior was taking the trauma in stride. He lost the lower portion of his right arm to an alligator while swimming with friends Monday afternoon in the Caloosahatchee River, which travels from Lake Hicpochee near Lake Okeechobee to the Gulf of Mexico in southwest Florida.
"I walked in (to his hospital room) and he told me, 'Well, it looks like you're not gonna be the only left-handed person in the family,' " sister Rebecca Langdale said.

No, 'E's Stunned
And no, 'e's not a parrot.
The cold snap plaguing large areas of the Tar Heel state is causing problems for sea turtles, who have begun washing up on shore in large numbers after being stunned by quickly-dropping water temperatures.
As of Thursday morning, 19 marine reptiles – three loggerheads, 16 green turtles – had been found on regional beaches, mostly in the Cape Lookout area.
Twelve of the green turtles died Wednesday night, but Jean Beasley, director of the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Topsail Beach, said the rest of the group was showing some signs of life.
“I think within 72 hours we should have a pretty good idea,” Beasley said late Wednesday. “It's going to take us a while to warm these turtles up.”
