They're Only Found In Coastal North Carolina

Venus's Flytraps, that is.

And only in a small strip of coastal North Carolina, at that - - the area right around the NC-SC border up to the Wilmington area and a little beyond. Only place in the world that they are found.

They are regularly poached and sold to plant fanciers; even a carnivorous plant garden in Wilmington was hit, with over $10,000 worth of plants taken. So it's now a felony in NC to poach them.

Headline of the Day

"Tourniquets now available at beach stands."

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH -- Lifeguard stands at Wrightsville Beach are equipped with new tourniquets after a donation from North American Rescue.

This probably in response to recent shark attacks at nearby Oak Island, in which two swimmers had arms bitten off.

"Keep Hookers Off the Piers?"

Really, PETA?

OAK ISLAND – PETA plans to fly a banner behind a plane Friday throughout Oak Island that reads “KEEP HOOKERS OFF THE PIERS!” to get an anti-fishing message across following shark bite incidents Sunday that maimed two swimmers.

"Dangling blood and bait in the water is like ringing a dinner bell for sharks, who rarely attack without provocation — and the consequences can be disastrous, as they were in these cases," PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk said. "PETA's banner will remind Oak Island–area beachgoers that fishing is dangerous not only for fish, turtles, birds and dolphins, but also for swimmers and tourists visiting the beaches."

Charges Downgraded To Just a Snipping

"Police - Stabbing report unfounded."

No one was actually stabbed in a reported stabbing Wednesday morning at Castle and 15th streets, according to police.

Officers responded to the area about 6:48 a.m. in reference to a stabbing call. When they arrived they found two male subjects who had been involved in a physical altercation. The fight started inside 1603 Castle St. before moving into the street, said Wilmington Police spokeswoman Linda Rawley.

"One man was holding a pair of scissors and the other had minor scrapes and bruises," Rawley said. One of the men was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center by ambulance where he was treated for minor injuries, she said.

I wonder if the guy with scissors tried to flee? Can you be charged for running with scissors?

Man's Best Friend - - Marooned

And I mean "marooned" in its literal sense, as in abandoned on a desert island.

A casual act of cruelty can take a "village" of volunteers to mend. Take the case of a small beagle abandoned this fall on an Intracoastal Waterway island in New Hanover County. Jeannie Mintz, who is president of Saving Animals During Disasters, wrote about it.

Click the link to read the rest. The dog, a beagle, had been abandoned on a "spoil" island, i.e., an island made by dredging operations, and was starving. It took over a week to trap the dog, because it was so mistrusting of humans, an indication it had been abused. Now it's been adopted by a presumably loving owner.

How About "Free Chicken & Ribs Night!"

"New director of Poplar Grove seeks to diversify plantation's story."

"We need to present multiple perspectives," Lewis said, choosing her words carefully. "We don't have the diversity of viewpoints that I'd like, and we don't have the diversity of visitors I'd like."

And, forseeing the reaction that last quote would get, the next sentence reads:

Lewis doesn't come to Poplar Grove as a carpetbagger.

LOL.

Not a Carpetbagger.

California's "Glass Beach" Endangered

People keep collecting the pretty glass.

Back when I was stationed in Norfolk in the early 1980's there was a small pebbly beach at the marina located where Norfolk Naval Base becomes Norfolk Naval Air Station. There was lots of "sea glass," as I called it, that washed up on that little beach - - most of it brown, from beer bottles, as you might expect.

Meanwhile, In Myrtle Beach...

...the law against wearing thong swimwear, which has been in place for 20 years (the law, not the thongs) is still being enforced:

Authorities say a North Carolina woman has been arrested for wearing a thong at Myrtle Beach.

Police say 22-year-old Tiara Garness, of High Point, N.C., was warned twice to cover up around 5 a.m. Friday on Ocean Boulevard.

Authorities say when Garness refused, she was arrested and charged with misdemeanor indecent exposure.

Meanwhile, At Wrightsville Beach, NC...

...there won't be a Joe's Crab Shack at Johnny Mercer's Fishing Pier after all.

I can see now it was probably a bad fit; although the location on the pier itself is a great idea, there just isn't enough parking in that area to make anyone happy, and no way to increase parking without destroying existing buildings, which ain't happening.

The Transformation of Orton Plantation

Orton Plantation, a former tourist attraction on the west bank of the Cape Fear River near Wilmington, North Carolina, is being transformed in a profound sort of way by its new owner, Louis Moore Bacon.

Bacon is working to return the landscape to a pre-20th century condition and opened the gates of the property Thursday to members of the media to show the progress that has been made at the plantation.

The property was recently listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is listed as a significant heritage area by the N.C.Natural Heritage program. Bacon has also entered into a Safe Harbor Agreement with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission that establishes the 8,400-acre property as a safe habitat for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker.

There is still plenty of work to be done, said Dillon Epp, property manager, even as the slow-growing longleaf pine begins to show signs of dominating the landscape and native grasses begin to flourish. Over 90 million acres of longleaf pine once existed in the Southeastern United States, but only three percent remain.

The forest is most healthy when fires regularly sweep through the underbrush, and so far the forest has only been burned once.

"It's going to take a long time to restore," Epp said.

The biggest project at hand will be the restoration of the signature rice crops that bordered the historic plantation house. Bacon and his team no longer have any impediments to restoring the rice fields, with all of the permits being recently obtained from the Army Corps of Engineers and state agencies.

But the public won't be able to visit Orton any more to see the work done to the plantation; and the slideshow that accompanies the news article would seem to drive that point home, as it only shows areas of the plantation that are being restored: no pictures of the beautiful gardens or the plantation house are included in the 57 images. I'm just fortunate I got to see Orton before it was closed to visitors.
