Why Didn't Y'all Tell Me...

...that Jonathan Frid died?

I was one of those kids who used to run home to watch Dark Shadows every day. The first episode I ever saw was the death of Rev. Trask, shown in the first couple of minutes of the following clip:

Needless to say this was probably more than a child as young as I was (around 5 or so) was prepared to watch, and the werewolf episodes gave me nightmares. What a great show it was, for its time.

Dark Shadows Trailer Released

It's Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, so you can't expect it to be entirely serious:

In this case it's not even remotely serious, judging from the trailer. It plays off of the "fish out of water" principle of Barnabas Collins being loose in the world...in 1972.

More here.

I've Been Watching...

the 1977 BBC version of Bram Stoker's Dracula, featuring Louis Jourdan as the Count. It's the most faithful version of all, although it takes a few liberties here and there. (I was watching it on YouTube, so got it in 10-minute increments).

Here's the first segment, if you wish to watch it yourself:

Nicholas Cage, BLOODSUCKING FIEND FROM HELL!!111!

According to an eBay seller, anyway.

Judge for yourself:

My question is this, of course: if a vampire can't cast a reflection in a mirror or a shadow, how can he be photographed?

The Galveston Vampire

GALVESTON — A man claiming to be a vampire faces felony burglary charges stemming from an incident early Saturday morning.

About 6:50 a.m., officers received a call about a break-in at an apartment complex in the 7800 block of Seawall, a Galveston police statement said.

According to the report, a woman was in bed when a man broke into her apartment. He then began to make hissing and growling noises while biting and striking the woman. He tried to drag her out of the apartment, but she ran away.

The man chased her into the complex’s parking lot, where the woman was able to get into a vehicle occupied by two of her neighbors. The man then ran up and began beating on the windows as the group drove away, the statement said.

The woman called police and described the suspect as a white male with multiple tattoos, wearing only boxer shorts. When officers arrived at the apartment complex, they found a man matching the description, but he ran away. The suspect was apprehended a short time later without incident. He told officers that he was a vampire, the statement said.

I lived briefly in Galveston, and in a strange coincidence, wrote a short story about a vampire while there. Small world.

Ingrid Pitt, 1937-2010: R.I.P.

Nazi concentration camp survivor and Hammer Horror sex bomb.

Pic:

And another pic, in the sort of typical busty vampire pose that made her famous:

Hammer Horror vampires like Ingrid would make being a male vampire hunter extremely difficult, just too much temptation there.

Good Interview With Christopher Lee

One of my favorite actors of all time.

I didn't know that he loves opera singing, and is a skilled baritone singer in his own right. It's too bad he hasn't recorded before, and at his age it's possibly too late now, since his voice won't be at it's best.

He's been in so many great movies; he's the definitive Dracula, and I loved him as Rochefort in the Richard Lester version of The Three Musketeers. Saruman, Count Dooku; so many fine performances.

One of Lee's more obscure performances was his appearance as Death on Saturday Night Live, in which he turned what would presumably be a terrifying avatar into a gentle, sympathetic character.

Down in the comments someone wonders why Lee hasn't received a knighthood. I agree, it's long overdue. I wonder if he's privately refused one?
