For Campers & Hikers

Especially those travelling in south Texas: Woods Roamer.

It's a defunct blog, but only recently so. Jim Curtis, this should give you some south Texas reference material when you write your next Grey Man novel.

Once Again, Life Imitates Monty Python....

...this time in Lufkin, Texas, where a catfish was allegedly used as a slapping weapon:

Texas police are still investigating to see if they can hook anyone with charges after an alleged fish-slapping incident over the weekend.

During the incident in Lufkin, a woman supposedly slapped her sister-in-law in the face face with a dead catfish.

There is, of course, nothing new under the sun:

Yet Another Veal-Eating* Teacher

Down in Forth Worth, Texas, another teacher with a sweet tooth:

FORT WORTH — A former Haltom High School computer technology teacher was sentenced Monday to four years of probation for having sex and doing “everything you could imagine” with students.

One of the students married the 40-year-old instructor, a prosecutor said Monday.

Oops, They Forgot It Was An Island

In Galveston, Texas, a man was shot at the Seawall on Friday evening. Having lived in Galveston briefly, I'd guess it was the Usual Suspects®, who come down every weekend from Houston during the summer beach season.

Unfortunately they forgot (if they ever really realized) that Galveston is an island, which means that it's very, very easy to limit escape options if you're travelling in a car.

Meanwhile, In Galveston, Texas...

...a man has been charged with cruelty to animals after leaving his dog to bake in an overheated car.

Rumors that the White House called to inquire about "how well cooked" the dog was went unverified at the time this story went to press.

Well, Hell. You Only Live Once.

Might as well have some fun while you're young enough to enjoy it:

Taylor Burnham, 18, was arrested on drunk driving charges after she was spotted wearing only cowboy boots in Corpus Christie, Texas, and then led police on a low-speed chase in her Jeep Wrangler.

Police were called to an alley behind homes in one of the city's subdivisions about 3.30am Sunday.

When officers arrived and spotted Burnham, she was standing stark naked -- except for a pair of cowboy boots -- near her Jeep.

Instead of stopping, Burnham climbed into her vehicle and drove off.

She proceeded to lead police on a low-speed chase, never exceeding 30 miles per hour.

No nude pics available, unfortunately - - or fortunately, since she's rather mousy-looking in the head/shoulders photo provided.

Meanwhile, In Texas City, Texas...

...a 15-year-old girl armed with a handgun chased off two burglars that were ransacking her house:

A 15-year-old-girl turned the tables on a pair of intruders early Saturday afternoon.

At 12:52 p.m., Texas City police received a call from the girl saying there was somebody trying to get into her house in the 7300 block of Meadowlark.

“She was home by herself in the bathroom and when she called — she was hysterical,” police Capt. Brian Goetschius said.

The teen said she heard the front door jiggle and when she looked out, she saw two men standing there, Goetschius said.

The girl called her father, her aunt and the police. Then she got her father’s handgun and went outside, Goetschius said.

One of the men had gone into the garage and was attempting to steal a pickup. The girl did not know where the other one was.

She confronted the man in the garage and he ran away, heading east on Meadowlark. He was followed by his accomplice, who had been inside, searching the house, Goetschius said.

“It had been ransacked,” the captain said.

Click to read the rest. If the Brady Campaign To End Handgun Ownership Violence had its way, the little girl would probably have been discovered by the two burglars, and quite possibly raped or even killed. And that would have been fine with the Bradies, as long as the victim wasn't allowed to own one of those evil guns. It's amazing, too, that it wasn't taken away from her and used against her, that's what the anti-gun people always say happens. It's also amazing she's still alive with a gun in the house at all, because to listen to the hoplophobes a gun in the house almost invariably leads to a "tragic accident."

Granddaughter of the Year

"Prosecution: Grandmother killed for $250."

Testimony was expected to continue today. Smith [the accused] also was expected to testify when the defense presents its case.

Why on Earth would her defense attorney put her on the stand? What's she going to do, claim self-defense? Grandma came at her with an umbrella, maybe? Tried to run her over with her walker?

Meanwhile, In Galveston, Texas...

...a Marine Vietnam War veteran's body lies unclaimed on a cold slab in the morgue because the town can't find next of kin and won't recognize his best friend or his unadopted stepdaughter as sufficient to release the body.

A decorated war hero who died on Veteran’s Day might get his final wishes fulfilled if a probate judge agrees to release his body to his stepdaughter during a probate hearing this morning.

Manual Maurice “C.W.” Walden, a U.S. Marine veteran who received the Purple Heart twice and was awarded the Bronze Star for valor for his service during the Vietnam War, died Nov. 11. His remains have lain unclaimed on a refrigerated slab in the Galveston County morgue since then because the medical examiner has been unable to find any blood relatives.

His close friend Coyt Mangum said that is just not acceptable.

“I’m really angry over this,” Mangum said. “I’ve been getting the runaround, no one would allow me to move forward and take care of his final arrangements because they can’t find any family. His family is gone; I’m the only family he has.”

Mangum, who also served in Vietnam, met Walden in a Galveston bar 25 years ago. The two became fast friends and often worked welding jobs together. In recent years, Mangum built the disabled vet an apartment on the ground floor of his home because health issues forced Walden to use a wheelchair. Mangum said the retired welder was well known around Galveston as a guy that would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.

As it turned out, Walden was helping others even after his death. Mangum on Monday gave Walden’s wheelchair to Al Perdew, a veteran whose own wheelchair had been stolen from his truck.

Update: Resolved.

NC BBQ Chain Sends BBQ To Texas Gov. Rick Perry

I mentioned here that Texas Gov. Rick Perry, currently running for President, has pissed off NC BBQ fans by describing some NC BBQ he ate (from King's BBQ in Kinston, NC) as "worse than roadkill." Now a NC BBQ chain, Smithfield's Chicken 'N Bar-B-Q, has sent the Governor some of their BBQ to try, presumably he'll have a better opinion of it now that he's running for President and subject to MSM scrutiny of everything he says (unlike, say, Barack Obama when he was running for President).

I have to guess that the Governor is going to be receiving a lot of BBQ from NC restaurants in the near future, as outraged Tarheels try to convert him to the NC BBQ style of chopped (and slawed) pigmeat BBQ with vinegar-based BBQ sauce. Frankly, I prefer Texas-style beef brisket BBQ myself, although NC BBQ is good, too. We'll see how the story shakes out, especially when Perry comes to NC to campaign.

Say It Ain't So, Rick

Rick Perry thinks the Eastern-NC-style BBQ served by Kings of Kinston, NC, tastes worse than roadkill.

Being Texan, I'm sure Perry probably prefers Texas-style beef brisket BBQ. I do too, when it comes down to it. And I've had some crap BBQ here in NC on occasion. Pigman's BBQ in Kill Devil Hills, NC was downright wretched.

Murder/Suicide With a Happy Ending

Because he left the murder part out, and simply committed suicide.

Of course, he forced his ex-girlfriend to witness his gruesome death, but hey, at least he didn't kill her, right?

Happy ending. Or will she remember that evil act for the rest of her life, seeing it in her mind's eye daily?

Did he, in the end, cause her more misery by allowing her to live rather than kill her?

The Galveston Vampire

GALVESTON — A man claiming to be a vampire faces felony burglary charges stemming from an incident early Saturday morning.

About 6:50 a.m., officers received a call about a break-in at an apartment complex in the 7800 block of Seawall, a Galveston police statement said.

According to the report, a woman was in bed when a man broke into her apartment. He then began to make hissing and growling noises while biting and striking the woman. He tried to drag her out of the apartment, but she ran away.

The man chased her into the complex’s parking lot, where the woman was able to get into a vehicle occupied by two of her neighbors. The man then ran up and began beating on the windows as the group drove away, the statement said.

The woman called police and described the suspect as a white male with multiple tattoos, wearing only boxer shorts. When officers arrived at the apartment complex, they found a man matching the description, but he ran away. The suspect was apprehended a short time later without incident. He told officers that he was a vampire, the statement said.

I lived briefly in Galveston, and in a strange coincidence, wrote a short story about a vampire while there. Small world.
