No comments at all on my Charleston vacation blogging, either the text posts or the photographs. I'm a bit disappointed in both of my regular readers. Has no one been to Charleston, South Carolina beside myself?
@BigDan: I saw the Queen Anne's Revenge Restaurant listed in the Charleston visitor's guide, and it sounded like one of those places that puts decor above food quality, and charges higher than it should. Is the food reasonably priced?
I was there in August of 2008 with Mrs. TOTWTYTR and a bunch of friends. Because I was presenting at a conference, we didn't get to do too much in the way of tourism, but we did get to Fort Sumter. We did get to go to a private residence on Folly Beach for a party. That's where we were introduced to Frogmore Stew.
My son, his fiancee, and my grandson were there earlier this summer and also loved it.
It could be on the list for a future relocation for any or all of us.
Thanks for the pictures, they were a nice reminder.
it is not. it was above average to expensive. i really liked the food, though. the decor was real interesting. had we not been so close to it, we probably would have never gone there. thinking back, i know i spent more than i should, but we just don't get good seafood here in cleveland, and my wife doesn't like seafood in general. so i kinda went crazy down there.
we busted out 10-12 hours of work a day there, hit happy hour, and then stumbled to our hotel right next door. work, drink, repeat. it was a blast.
i don't normally comment on your blog, but i do follow it daily. you are the first one i look at behind my email. ace of spades and gateway pundit are 2 and 3. but i gotta get my dose of day-by-day first and your blog is the best place to see it.
@TOTWYTYR: I'd never before heard of Frogmore Stew, had to look it up. Looks simple to prepare and tasty to eat, thanks for mentioning it.
@BigDan: Thanks for the reply! I like to find seafood places where the locals eat lunch, those are usually cheap and good. One of the seafood places we tried on our visit was called Shem Creek Bar & Grill in Mt. Pleasant; great location right on the aforementioned Shem Creek, but they actually served us pre-packaged, frozen shrimp and scallops, and charged us as much as if they had been fresh. Needless to say we were disappointed/outraged.
@Bob, I had never heard of it either, but it was terrific. That was a really nice evening, one of my favorites now that I think of it. Beer, great home cooked food, getting to meet real Southerners and enjoy their hospitality. Sadly, the friend that arranged it has moved all the way back to Oregon, so I'll have to find another reason to get down there.
On a totally weird side note. You look like a younger version of Mrs. TOTWTYTR's favorite uncle. He was mine too for that matter.
A newsroom comprised entirely of leftists/liberals is no more capable of ideological objectivity than an all-white newsroom would be of racial objectivity, or an all-male newsroom of gender objectivity.

The Drawn Cutlass Philosophy
Be as decent as you can. Don't believe without evidence. Treat things divine with marked respect, and don't have anything to do with them. Do not trust humanity without collateral security, it will play you some scurvy trick. Remember that it hurts no one to be treated as an enemy entitled to respect until he prove himself a friend worthy of affection. Cultivate a taste for distasteful truths. And, finally, most important of all, endeavor to see things as they are, not as they ought to be.

Jeff Cooper's Rules of Gun Safety
All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. (For those who insist that this particular gun is unloaded, see Rule 1.)
Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target. This is the Golden Rule. Its violation is directly responsible for about 60 percent of inadvertent discharges.
Identify your target, and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything that you have not positively identified.

Restaurant Ratings
My restaurant ratings, mostly intended for BBQ restaurants, will be on a 1-5 scale, with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best. Unlike most reviewers, I don't intend to play games with the rating scale by introducing fractions such as "2 and 1/2" or "4 and 3/4," I've always considered that stupid and a signal that the reviewer is trying to avoid making an honest 1-5 judgment.
Here is the breakdown of the ratings:
1 out of 5: waste of time, crap, unable to finish eating; apathy by staff/ownership
2 out of 5: edible, but no effort to impress; staff/management going through motions; desultory.
3 out of 5: average; reasonably good food, moderate effort by staff/management
4 out of 5: good; tasty, well-prepared food, staff alert, restaurant clean.
5 out of 5: great; excellent food, cooked fresh. Staff attentive and proactive, management responsive to complaints. Restaurant spotless.

We stayed in the Embassy Suites there - the one that's in the original Citadel building - several years ago.
But we weren't there very long. Had decent BBQ at a place that might have been the one you went to, but I can't remember.
you like shipwrecks? you like pirate history? i've got a restaurant you need to see.
when i work on Daniel Island, we eat at the Queen Anne's Revenge Restaurant. plenty of relics to check out. awesome seafood.
i'm from cleveland but i helped install the Benefitfocus office spaces in a couple buildings next to the restaurant.
day scallops were my favorite.

thanks for your efforts. i really do enjoy it.
I was just there for all of one day a month or so ago. Went to Patriot's point, to see the ships and visit Fort Sumter.
I read every one of your posts with interest...just didn't have incisive or pithy to say.
I've really gotta start proofreading better before hitting "post".
Hopefully you have some idea of what that nonsense was supposed to mean.

Woah! I'm going to start asking people to leave comments. This works like a charm!
