Um...Pardon My Asking This, But...

...doesn't it sort of defeat the purpose of using GPS trackers if you advertise to the thieves that you're doing it?

Snatching baby Jesus at Christmas time.

On the other hand, if you advertise the fact that you are doing it, and some shmuck steals the object anyway (be it a baby Jesus or a Menorah or a car or a laptop or anything else), then:

A. The perp (or rather, his or her lawyer) is ill-postured to assert an entrapment claim; and

B. All but the most shameless of criminal defense attorneys [http://www.justice.gov/usao/nys/pressreleases/December13/StanleyCohenIndictmentPR.php] would try to avoid having to explain their client's cluelessness to a judge or jury. The case would be able to move to plea bargain mode more expeditiously, thereby sparing the burdens on the judicial system and the taxpayers, while, at the same time, posturing the prosecutors to bargain a more severe sentence.

Potentially a win-win situation for all concerned (except the perp).
