Treasure Blog: Colonial-Era US Threepence

Found in Nottinghamshire, UK, by a treasure hunter using a metal detector.

Who knows how it found its way to UK? Taken in trade? A piece of pocket change that was lost?

Could bring up to $1.7M at auction.

Walking Dead "Companion Series" Given the Green Light

Story.

Personally, I think that, rather than simply giving us a new crew of survivors in a single location, they ought to do each show with a different cast in a unique location. I imagine that would be prohibitively expensive, though. I'd like to see other notions of surviving the Zombie Apocalypse - - on an island, for example, or in a remote area - - the Everglades or the Okefenokee Swamp, for example. What about Alaska? Do zombies become corpsicles when the temperature is ten below zero? How about survivors holed up in old forts, such as Fort Monroe?

I'm looking forward to it.

*Sigh* Another One Gets By Me

The Boon Island Lighthouse, on Boon Island in Maine, just sold for $78,000.

YORK, Maine New England's tallest lighthouse has been sold for $78,000.

A federal government spokeswoman says the General Services Administration has accepted a bid for the Boon Island Light Station off York, Maine. The winning bidder is Portland, Maine, resident Art Girard.

The Administration closed out an auction of the 133-foot-tall lighthouse tower on Aug. 17. More than a dozen bidders vied for it. The government had to approve Girard's bid, which was the highest of the bunch.

Lighthouse Keeper was one of those careers designed specifically for introverts or even misanthropes. Sadly, lighthouses are all mostly automated now.

A Hermit? No.

Think of him, instead, as The Last Man On Earth, a scavenger surviving on the belongings of others.

A true hermit would either be self-reliant or would survive on the charity of his neighbors. Reading the article it seems as if he made some attempts early in his time in the woods to live off the land, but Maine isn't a friendly state for such an existence, at least not in the killing cold months. This fellow didn't farm, didn't forage for natural foods รก la Euell Gibbons, didn't fish or hunt. He stole. He was a jackdaw, a magpie.

Nor does it sound as if he formed any coherent philosophy or had any soul-searing revelations; no epiphanies. He was too busy surviving - - by stealing - - to do that.

In the end it sounds as if he were one of those people who just wants to be left alone, and made it happen for 27 years of his life. In truth, though, with surviving family, he could have done it in a way that wouldn't have required his breaking the law; easy enough to buy a small plot of land in the wilderness, and have one of his brothers bring supplies once a month or so. His needs weren't so exotic that his family couldn't have afforded to support such a lifestyle. Probably he never thought of asking, or thought he would be refused.

Someday, Please, Lord...

...let me make this journey.

The pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela: the shrine of St. James the Greater, the apostle and the patron of Spain.

Give me my scallop-shell of quiet,
My staff of faith to walk upon,
My scrip of joy, immortal diet,
My bottle of salvation,
My gown of glory, hope's true gage;
And thus I'll take my pilgrimage.

Blood must be my body's balmer;
No other balm will there be given:
Whilst my soul, like quiet palmer,
Travelleth towards the land of heaven;
Over the silver mountains,
Where spring the nectar fountains;
There will I kiss
The bowl of bliss;
And drink mine everlasting fill
Upon every milken hill.
My soul will be a-dry before;
But, after, it will thirst no more.

3rd Level Habib

We're experiencing problems with our cable and internet, and of course we're having to navigate Time Warner Cable's troubleshooting protocols; as my sister says, we are at the 3rd level Habib of customer service.

Meanwhile, In Burlington, NC...

...the local Sonic restaurant has a problem with decimal points on its street sign, leading to a windfall for a local charity:

According to WGHP, Sonic restaurants nationwide had a deal where they sold corn dogs for 50 cents each.

However, at the Sonic in Burlington, North Carolina, instead of advertising 50 cent corn dogs, they advertised “.50 cent” corn dogs, meaning each corn dog would cost half a penny.

One man decided to cash in on this amazing deal. He ordered 2,000 corn dogs to donate to Allied Churches of Alamance County.

Although the manager of the Sonic realized the sign was a mistake, he decided to honor the man’s order anyway.

Just Change Two Words...

...and this article could be about race relations in the US:

"God knows, the Scots have every right to be fed up with the English. But their big problem is their own sense of victimhood."

Just substitute blacks for Scots, and whites for English.

Not Often I Gloat Over a Death...

...but in the case of John Walker Jr., I'm willing to make an exception.

Enjoy your afterlife in the Ninth Circle of Hell, traitor.

Doing Everything Wrong

Two white Mississippi men, one of them a Marine Iraq War veteran, were beaten by a black mob outside a Huddle House restaurant in West Point, Mississippi. One of them is in a coma, and might be in a vegetative state for the rest of his life. The lamestream media is giving scant coverage to the story.

From reading the accounts of the attack, the two white men did everything wrong. Maybe they didn't know Derbyshire's Rules for interacting with black people, but when they first approached a Waffle House full of blacks, they were warned by an older black man outside not to risk going in. They ignored the warning, probably because one of them, David Knighten, had a concealed carry license and was carrying a .45 pistol at the time. The pistol probably gave them a measure of confidence to deal with problems rather than avoid them. An argument ensued with the blacks, police were called, and an incipient incident was avoided. The two white men departed for another restaurant, the Huddle House, apparently not realizing that the blacks were following them. At the Huddle House they were attacked by the mob of blacks. Why Knighten didn't use his .45 at this point I don't understand; that's the very purpose for which one carries a CCW license.

So, the mistakes made were:

1. Lack of situational awareness. They were apparently in Condition White the entire night. They didn't perceive a mob of blacks to be a threat.

2. When warned, they ignored the warning. A good man actually went to trouble of warning them that they were walking into trouble. They ignored the warning, and indeed walked into trouble.

3. When police were called and the situation apparently resolved, they went back into Condition White, thinking themselves safe. They drove to another restaurant, with apparently no awareness of being followed. Condition White.

4. The Huddle House is apparently so unsafe that they have to have a security guard. NOTE TO SELF: IF RESTAURANT NEEDS SECURITY GUARD, FIND ANOTHER RESTAURANT.

5. How quickly did the attack occur at the Huddle House? Did the two whites have time to call police? Did they try? Were they ambushed (again, Condition White, totally unaware, apparently)?

6. Wrighten doesn't deploy handgun. Was he unable to? Unwilling to? His friend is now in a coma because he didn't deploy that gun in a situation where it was desperately needed.

Try thinking of this in terms of Zombies. Imagine that you live in a world where brain-eating zombies exist, so many that you acquire a CCW permit to defend against them. One night, while about to enter a restaurant, you see zombies inside, and are warned by a man outside that hungry zombies are inside the restaurant. Are you really going inside that restaurant? Then, having escaped the clutches of the zombies with the help of the police, you drive to another restaurant, oblivious to the fact that the zombies are following, and are attacked in the parking lot. Rather than defend yourself with your handgun, you let the zombies devour your friend.

What the hell, dude? Did you buy that gun just to be a cool-looking accessory? SHOOT THOSE ZOMBIES!

I Guess They Just Racis', Huh?

President Obama got a less-than-enthusiastic reception at the National American Legion convention here in Charlotte.

So when Obama began by lecturing the veterans about cynicism and explaining his most recent foreign policy choices — instead of addressing the VA crisis — the audience clearly wasn’t pleased.

Fox News cameras captured a sea of blank or frowning faces looking silently back at the president as he paused for failed applause line after failed applause line.

Obama’s assertion of the indispensability of American leadership worldwide failed to merit a single clap. And when he outlined the “progress” made in Afghanistan, the president resolutely paused for several agonizing seconds until the veterans provided their tepid support.

Way Down Upon De Pee Dee Ribber*

A Pee Dee homeowner shot two home invaders, killing one.

That's down in South Carolina near Darlington, for those unfamiliar with the Carolinas.

*Stephen Foster's famous song Old Folks At Home, more familiarly known as (Way Down Upon the) Suwanee River, was originally considered with a Pee Dee river location in the lyrics.
